The mill can cut the logs at different angles, to give the wood a different appearance. Wood flooring is either plainsawn, quartersawn, or riftsawn.
- Plainsawn is the most common cut. The boards contain
more variation than the other two cuts because the grain patterns are more
obvious.
- Quartersawn wood is more expensive because
quartersawing produces less wood per log. Quartersawn wood twists and
cups less and wears more evenly. The boards have a different look than
the plainsawn.
- Riftsawn wood is similar to quartersawing, but the cut is made at a
slightly different angle.
